Today’s REAL Golf Tip  is part of the, “Play the Best You Can in 2010” series.

Play REAL Golf offers an, easy to use, workable system to create positive emotional-behavioral changes that will improve golf performance and, more importantly, enjoyment.

Today’s tip is inspired by our first major of the year The Masters (my favorite).  As everyone knows Augusta National is known for fast greens and fast tightly cut fairways.  The first cut around greens is cut about the same length as most fairways.  Today we’ll talk about keeping it  REAL around the greens by hitting chip shots from tight lies.
  1. First, your Cleveland wedges should be medium to low bounce to allow you to take shallow divots.

  2. Your set up should be slightly open to the target with 60% of your weight on your front foot. With your set up you will notice that your hands are ahead of the ball slightly, this establishes your shaft angle.

  3. As you take the club back, keep your hands quiet, with the length of the backswing dictating the length of the shot.

  4. The KEY to success is maintaining the shaft angle as you return to the ball. Your hands will remain ahead of the club head. This will give you a descending attack, down and through the ball which will give you a crisp shot with spin.

Maintaining your shaft angle will have you hitting shots that bounce once skip and stop, it will also help you be more consistent with shots from the rough around the green.

Throughout the year I will be conducting a series of scoring clinics with our friends from Cleveland Golf, I’ll keep you posted when and where so you can Keep it REAL in the short game scoring zone. Have Fun and Keep it REAL!!
